Iris edomensis

Endemic to the Edom Mountains of southern Jordan, where it grows in desert mountain terrain above 1000 m, Iris edomensis belongs to the Juno group of irises (subgenus Scorpiris), bulbous species with persistent fleshy storage roots. Very low-growing, around 10 cm tall, it forms a rosette of narrow, wavy, silvery-green leaves edged white, barely exceeded by the flower. The solitary bloom is whitish to cream, heavily blotched with dark purple on the standards and on the white-margined falls. Flowering is irregular, occurring only after sufficiently rainy winters. The species needs very free-draining soil and a strictly dry summer dormancy, typical of Near Eastern Junos.
