Daubenya coccinea ? aurea

Native to South Africa, where it grows at altitude in the Roggeveld Mountains, Daubenya aurea (often sold as D. coccinea for its red-flowered form) is a small bulb in the family Asparagaceae (subfamily Scilloideae). Its bulb produces two prostrate leaves lying flat against the ground. From late August to early September it bears a condensed inflorescence of tubular flowers, scarlet or golden yellow depending on the form, surrounded by coloured bracts. The species grows on dolerite-derived clay soils in a winter-rainfall region and tolerates frost and snow. In cultivation it needs well-drained soil, full sun, and a strictly dry summer dormancy.
