Paramongaia weberbauri

Native to western Peru, in the rain-shadow of the Andes, Paramongaia weberbaueri is a bulbous plant in the family Amaryllidaceae, called the giant Peruvian daffodil though unrelated to Narcissus. Two forms exist: a highland one (from 3000 m) flowering in summer and resting in winter, and a lowland one flowering in winter and resting in summer. The bulb produces strap-shaped, blue-tinted leaves. The nodding flower resembles a large trumpet daffodil, up to 18 cm across, yellow, fragrant, and marked with green at the throat. Rare in the wild, it needs well-drained soil, full sun, and dormancy matching the form grown.
