Moraea is a large genus of around 200 species in the family Iridaceae, found throughout sub-Saharan Africa with a few outlying species in the Middle East and the Mediterranean; its greatest diversity lies in the winter-rainfall Western Cape. Plants grow from a corm renewed annually, with fibrous tunics breaking down in a herringbone pattern, and bear channelled leaves with distinct surfaces, an unusual trait. The iris-like flowers, with three outer tepals and three inner ones, often last only a single day. Most species need well-drained soil, full sun, and dry summer dormancy. The exact species has not been identified.
