Cyanella hauthallii

The species offered as 'Cyanella hauthallii' could not be reliably confirmed in the botanical literature consulted, so this entry describes the genus's characteristics. Cyanella is a South African genus (Namibia included) in the family Tecophilaeaceae, comprising seven species, five in the Cape Floral Region. Plants grow from a tunicated corm and form a basal rosette of deciduous leaves. The branched inflorescence bears zygomorphic flowers with dimorphic anthers, in shades of blue, mauve, brown, orange, yellow, pink or white, between August and November. These arid Cape geophytes require sharply drained sandy soil, ample watering in winter-spring, and a dry summer rest.
