Hesperantha latifolia

Native to Namaqualand in South Africa, a winter-rainfall region, Hesperantha latifolia is a small cormous Iridaceae, rarely exceeding 3 to 8 cm in height, belonging to a genus of about 79 species mostly found in South Africa. Its bright pink flowers, carried on an elongated tube, remain open during the day — unlike many other, evening-flowering Hesperantha — and are pollinated by long-proboscid flies. Flowering occurs in the southern spring, after the winter rains. Like other Namaqualand geophytes, it requires sharply drained sandy soil, full sun, watering through winter, and a completely dry summer rest.
