Iris hayeni

Iris haynei (the correct spelling of 'hayeni'), the Gilboa iris, is a rare species endemic to the Gilboa ridge in Israel, from section Oncocyclus. It is not a bulbous iris but a rhizomatous one, forming clumps 35 to 50 cm tall with sword-shaped leaves up to 40 cm long, in fans of 5 to 8 leaves. In March it produces a single, spectacular flower 10 to 12 cm across, purple to crimson, veined and dotted, with a beard of yellowish to dark hairs on a dark background. A protected species, it requires well-drained soil, full sun, and dry summer dormancy.
