Gladiolus hyalinus

Native to the western and southern Cape of South Africa, from Namaqualand to the southwestern Cape, Gladiolus hyalinus is a South African cormous gladiolus related to Gladiolus liliaceus but with smaller flowers, tepals 22 to 30 mm and a perianth tube 25 to 36 mm long. The stem, 40 to 70 cm tall, bears a spike of pale straw-yellow flowers streaked and freckled with mauve to dark magenta, unremarkable from a distance but delicate up close, and lightly scented. Flowering spans winter to spring. Native to a winter-rainfall region, it requires well-drained soil, full sun, and dry summer dormancy.
