Stenomesson general

The catalogue entry 'Stenomesson general' does not specify a particular species; the description therefore covers the genus. Native to South America, this Amaryllidaceae genus of around twenty species ranges from southern Ecuador to northern Chile, through Peru, Colombia, and Argentina, between 500 and 3500 m elevation, from arid coastal deserts to high Andean grassland. Plants grow from a tunicate bulb, with narrow, glossy or glaucous leaves appearing with or after flowering. The inflorescence is an umbel on a solid scape beneath persistent membranous bracts. Andean members require a cool winter to flower well, well-drained soil, and a pronounced dry rest.
