Trillium cuneatum

Native to the southeastern United States (Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee, the Carolinas, Mississippi), where it grows in rich woodland, often on limestone soils, Trillium cuneatum is a rhizomatous perennial of the Melanthiaceae family. Each stem bears a whorl of three ovate leaves mottled with silvery marbling, topped by an erect, sessile flower with three dark maroon petals, occasionally bronze or greenish, up to 7.5 cm long, with a faint sweet, banana-like fragrance. It flowers from March to April. A woodland plant, it requires humus-rich, moist, well-drained soil and shaded to semi-shaded exposure.
