Romulea hirsuta

Native to the Western and Northwest Cape of South Africa, from Clanwilliam to the Cape Peninsula and east to Caledon and Bredasdorp, Romulea hirsuta grows on granitic, sandstone or clay slopes and flats. Its symmetrical, bell-shaped, fibrous-coated corm produces two to six grooved, sometimes ciliate basal leaves and a stem 6 to 30 cm tall. In August and September it bears unscented pink to red flowers marked with darker blotches around a yellow throat. The plant needs well-drained soil, full sun, and the dry summer dormancy typical of winter-flowering Cape geophytes.
