Tulbaghia natalense

Native to the Cape provinces and KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa, where it grows between 800 and 1800 m in the marshy or rocky grasslands of the Drakensberg, Tulbaghia natalensis is an evergreen, clump-forming bulbous plant with a thick rhizomatous rootstock, reaching 40 to 50 cm. Each bulb bears 6 to 8 strap-shaped, glaucous leaves smelling of garlic when bruised. In summer it produces an umbel of 6 to 10 white flowers tinged purple to pale pink, three-lobed, with an orange-yellow crown, releasing a sweet almond fragrance in the evening. It needs cool, well-drained soil and a sunny position.
