Nerine sarniensis

Native to the rocky slopes of the Western Cape, South Africa, notably around Table Mountain, Nerine sarniensis (the Guernsey lily) is a bulbous plant with a tunicated bulb, its foliage appearing after flowering. In autumn, a bare 30–45 cm stem carries an umbel of flowers with narrow, wavy tepals in a characteristic scarlet to orange-red, their surface seeming dusted with crystalline flecks in sunlight. Introduced to Europe in the 17th century, it has given rise to three centuries of ornamental hybridising. It needs well-drained soil, a sunny, sheltered position, and dry summer dormancy, with the bulb planted with its neck exposed.
