Nerine sarniensis ‘Quest’

'Quest' is a cultivar of Nerine sarniensis, the Guernsey lily, a bulbous plant native to the rocky slopes of the Western Cape, South Africa. Like the species, it flowers in autumn on a bare 30–45 cm stem before the foliage appears, bearing an umbel of narrow, wavy-tepalled flowers with a crystalline sheen. 'Quest' is distinguished by a very dark, near-black purple colouring that takes on bluish tones in full sun — an unusual shade within the species' usual red-to-orange range. Selected by the Californian nursery A Dry Garden, this cultivar needs well-drained soil, a sunny, sheltered position, and dry summer dormancy.
