Gelasina elongata syn azurea

Native to South America (Argentina, Uruguay, southern Brazil), Gelasine azurea (syn. G. elongata) is the type species of a small cormous genus in the Iridaceae. Its narrow, long, pleated grey-green leaves accompany stems some 50 cm tall bearing, in late spring and early summer, bright blue or violet flowers with a white eye, which open each morning crocus-like before flaring into stars. Each flower lasts only a day, but the succession of blooms extends the display. The plant wants warm soil that stays cool below, a sheltered position, and some relief from hot summer afternoon sun.
