Tritoniopsis caffra

Sold as Tritoniopsis caffra, now regarded as a synonym of Tritoniopsis afra, this cormous Iridaceae is native to sandstone slopes of the southern and south-eastern Cape in South Africa, an area with year-round rainfall, its range extending east to the Eastern Cape and the Tsitsikamma region. It forms tufts of grass-like leaves with 2-4 ribs and reaches 80 cm, bearing scarlet, funnel-shaped flowers. It occurs in damp grassland, fynbos and forest margins. Grow in free-draining soil and full sun, planting corms in autumn after a dry summer dormancy.
