Commelina tuberosa

Native to Mexico, growing in moist meadows, open woodland and pine-oak forest, Commelina tuberosa is a perennial Commelinaceae with tuberous roots, now grown worldwide as an ornamental. Its bright blue flowers, with three petals of equal size, open one at a time each day from a purple-blotched, purse-like spathe, opening in the morning and fading by afternoon; flowering runs from July to September. The starchy tubers are edible. It grows in light to medium, free-draining, neutral to mildly alkaline soil, in a sunny position, with a dry winter rest.
