Neomarica imbricata

Native to southern Brazil, Neomarica imbricata belongs to a genus of rhizomatous American Iridaceae with flattened, equitant, lanceolate to sword-shaped leaves borne on flowering stems that are themselves flattened and leaf-like. As in other "walking irises," the strongly scented flowers last only around eighteen hours, appearing in cream, yellow, bluish or purplish tones depending on the species. After flowering, a small plantlet develops where the flower was borne, and its weight gradually bends the stem to the ground, where it roots, providing natural vegetative propagation. Grow in well-drained, humus-rich soil, in part shade, sheltered from frost.
