Gladiolus equitans

Native to Namaqualand, on rocky hillsides of South Africa's Western Cape, Gladiolus equitans is a dwarf cormous geophyte. An underground corm gives rise to leathery leaves about 15 cm long and a flowering stem rarely exceeding 30 cm. In spring it produces a spike of small, brightly coloured flowers around 2.5 cm across, each short-lived but renewed over several weeks. It requires a sunny position and well-drained soil typical of its winter-rainfall, semi-arid habitat, and becomes dormant in summer, kept dry.
