Rhodophiala araucana ex Mary Thornhilll

Native to the Andes of Chile and Argentina, where it endures a long dry winter under snow, Rhodophiala araucana is a bulbous plant in the Amaryllidaceae family, closely related to Hippeastrum. This accession derives from a collection referenced 'ex Mary Thornhill', after the origin of its horticultural stock. The bulb produces narrow, strap-shaped leaves and, in spring, a stem bearing an umbel of one to six bright red to orange, funnel-shaped tubular flowers. It requires a sunny position, cool winter conditions, and dry dormancy after flowering.
