Crocus flavus

Native to the Balkans and western Turkey, where it colonises rocky grassland and open scrub, Crocus flavus (Iridaceae) is a spring-flowering cormous plant and the parent of many Dutch 'large yellow crocus' cultivars. The tunicated corm produces narrow, grass-like leaves marked with a silvery central vein, appearing with or just after the flowers. These are goblet-shaped, a bright, uniform orange-yellow. It requires a sunny position, well-drained, calcareous to neutral soil, and dry summer dormancy after flowering.
