Tulipa altaica

Native to the Altai Mountains of Siberia, Kazakhstan and China, Tulipa altaica (Liliaceae) is a small botanical tulip 10-20 cm tall, occasionally to 35 cm. The ovoid bulb, with a brown, papery tunic, produces 3-4 greyish-green, ovate to lanceolate leaves shorter than the flower. In spring (May) it bears a single star-shaped flower with broad yellow tepals tinged red and green on the reverse. It requires a sunny position, well-drained soil, and the dry summer dormancy typical of Central Asian botanical tulips.
