Cyrtanthus obliquus

The Knysna lily, Cyrtanthus obliquus, grows on coastal grasslands and cliffs from KwaZulu-Natal to the Eastern Cape (South Africa). The large ovoid bulb, 7 to 10 cm across, is best grown with two-thirds exposed above soil and bears twisted, grey-green, evergreen strap-shaped leaves. In spring to summer a stout stem carries a nodding umbel of up to a dozen waxy, tubular flowers, red-orange tipped with green. An evergreen species, it requires full sun, well-drained soil, and a clearly defined dry winter rest (March to August).
