Aloes arborescens

Widespread across southern Africa, from Malawi and Mozambique to South Africa, Aloe arborescens (occasionally misspelled 'Aloes') is a much-branched succulent shrub forming candelabra-like clumps 2 to 3 m tall. The thick, blue-green, spiny-margined leaves are clustered in rosettes at the branch tips. In winter each rosette sends up several stems bearing cylindrical racemes of tubular red-orange flowers, rich in nectar and popular with sunbirds. It requires full sun and well-drained soil, tolerates drought well, but is frost-tender.
