Iris kemoanensis

Native to the Himalaya (Kashmir, Nepal, Tibet, western China), Iris kemaonensis, the Kumaon iris (the catalogue spelling "kemoanensis" is a variant of kemaonensis), is a small rhizomatous plant. Its gnarled, fleshy rhizomes produce no visible stem: the fragrant flowers, borne singly or in pairs, purple to lilac with darker blotches, emerge almost at ground level between two short green spathes. Flowering occurs in May and June, in alpine pastures and meadows above 2800 m. It requires a sunny position, well-drained soil, and a dry rest period.
