Lachenalia vanzyliae

Native to the winter-rainfall regions of the Western Cape, South Africa, Lachenalia vanzyliae, the van Zyl opal flower, is a bulbous perennial in the family Asparagaceae. One or two fleshy, strap-shaped leaves, often marked purplish-brown on the upper surface, accompany a stem up to 25 cm tall bearing a raceme of tubular flowers: the outer segments pale blue to white with green or yellow-green gibbosities, the inner segments yellow-green edged white. Flowering occurs from autumn to early spring. It grows well in full sun, in well-drained soil, with a dry summer rest period.
