Witsenia maura

Endemic to a very restricted area of the southwestern Cape in South Africa, where it grows in marshy coastal and mountain fynbos, Witsenia maura is the sole species in the genus Witsenia, in the iris family. This rhizomatous geophyte forms fans of stiff, sword-shaped leaves on stems up to 1.3 m tall. From autumn to late austral winter (April to September), it produces racemes of paired, tubular flowers that remain half-closed, with pubescent outer tepals that are dark green to blackish, brightening to bright yellow at the tips. It requires moist to marshy soil and a sunny to part-shaded position.
