Leucojum vernum (spring snowflake) is a bulbous perennial in the amaryllis family, native to central and southern Europe from Belgium to Ukraine, growing in damp woodland and moist meadows. The bulb produces glossy green, strap-shaped leaves and a short stem bearing, in late winter or earliest spring alongside the snowdrops, a solitary, lightly scented, bell-shaped white flower, each tepal tipped with a green spot. Hardy and easy to grow, it thrives in cool to moist soil, in full sun or part shade, and naturalizes readily in woodland or grass.
