The name Gladiolus spAC ? refers to a plant whose exact species could not be confirmed with certainty; it unambiguously belongs, however, to the genus Gladiolus (Iridaceae), which comprises over 250 species, the great majority native to southern Africa and concentrated in the winter-rainfall region of the Cape, with additional representatives in tropical Africa, Madagascar, Europe and the Near East. These cormous plants produce upright, sword-shaped leaves and a flowering stem bearing a spike, generally one-sided, of funnel-shaped flowers in varied colors. Cultivation requires full sun and well-drained soil, with summer or winter dormancy depending on the species' geographic origin.
