Dahlia excelsa, the tree dahlia, is a tuberous perennial native to central Mexico (Mexico State and Guerrero), growing in seasonally dry tropical habitats. Its upright stems, woody and hollow at the base, carry deciduous, large compound leaves up to 60 cm long, and can reach 5 to 9 m in height, giving rise to its common name. In late autumn and winter it produces large single flowers in pale lilac to soft purple, borne in corymbs at the stem tips. Frost-tender, this species is best grown in mild climates, in full sun, on fertile, well-drained soil.
