Freesia xanthospila

Freesia xanthospila is a name now treated as a synonym of Freesia caryophyllacea, a small cormous plant endemic to the Western Cape of South Africa, growing in fynbos and renosterveld on clay or sandy soils from Wolseley to Swellendam. Dwarf in habit (5-10 cm tall), it produces narrow leaves and, in late winter to spring, fragrant tubular flowers that are white to cream with an orange-flushed base and purplish-brown markings on the lower tepals. It is grown in a sunny position on well-drained soil, with a dry summer dormancy after flowering, and needs protection from frost.
