Polyxena longituba (ex odorata)

Polyxena longituba, sometimes listed under its synonym Polyxena odorata and now often included in the genus Lachenalia (as Lachenalia longituba), is a small bulbous plant native to the Roggeveld plateau in South Africa, one of the coldest parts of the winter-rainfall region. The bulb produces two or three narrow, channeled, lance-shaped leaves forming a low tuft about 7 cm tall. From late summer into autumn, small, fragrant, very pale mauve tubular flowers with a darker keel appear nestled among the leaves. It prefers a sunny position, well-drained soil, and a dry summer dormancy.
