Codonopsis lanceolata

Codonopsis lanceolata, known in Korea as deodeok, is a perennial climbing plant in the bellflower family (Campanulaceae), native to East Asia (China, Korea, Japan, and the Russian Far East). It develops a fleshy, spindle-shaped taproot reminiscent of celeriac, and a twining stem reaching 3-4.5 m when supported, with elliptic-ovate leaves. In late summer it bears solitary, bell-shaped flowers, pale green outside and mottled purple within. Grown both as an ornamental and for its edible, medicinal root, it prefers moist, rich soil in a sunny to partly shaded position.
