The genus Colchicum (Colchicaceae) comprises about a hundred bulbous (corm-forming) species native mainly to the Mediterranean basin and western Asia, several of which flower in autumn, before the foliage appears the following spring. The cup-shaped flowers, pink, mauve or white, resemble crocuses but belong to a distinct family. The whole plant is toxic.
