Agapanthus praecox subsp. orientalis (Agapanthaceae) is native to the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. It is the most widely grown subspecies of the genus: evergreen, broad arching strap-like leaves form handsome clumps, topped in summer by large, dense umbels of funnel-shaped blue or white flowers. It needs full sun and well-drained soil, tolerates drought once established, but is not reliably hardy through severe frost.
