Allium amethystinum

Allium amethystinum (Amaryllidaceae), sometimes called amethyst garlic, is native to the Mediterranean region (Italy, Greece, Turkey, the Balkans). Growing 40 to 80 cm tall, it forms a single bulb whose tubular leaves wither before flowering. From May to July it produces a dense, spherical umbel of small reddish-purple flowers that are rich in nectar and popular with bees and butterflies. Grow in full sun in well-drained soil; hardy and tolerant of summer drought.
