Anigozanthos flavidus (Haemodoraceae), the tall kangaroo paw, is native to southwestern Australia, where it grows in damp areas and forest margins. This rhizomatous perennial forms a clump of evergreen, strap-shaped leaves from which tall, velvety stems 1-2 m high rise in summer, bearing tubular, paw-shaped flowers in shades from yellow-green to red depending on selection, and rich in nectar. Grow in full sun, in well-drained soil; drought-tolerant once established, but protect from frost in cool climates.
