Asphodelus aestivus, syn. A. microcarpus (Asphodelaceae), is a Mediterranean perennial common in scrubland, wasteland and roadsides. It forms a rosette of evergreen, glaucous, lance-shaped leaves, from which tall, branched flower stems 1-2 m high rise in spring, bearing numerous star-shaped white flowers with a brown midvein, opening gradually from the base upward. The fleshy root tubers store water, allowing the plant to withstand drought. Grow in full sun, in poor, well-drained soil.
