Montbretia

Crocosmia 'Lucifer' (Iridaceae) is a garden hybrid raised by British nurseryman Alan Bloom, crossing C. masoniorum with C. paniculata and registered in 1969. Now the most widely grown montbretia, it sends up tall, arching stems to 1.2 m in summer, bearing spikes of vivid scarlet-red tubular flowers above pleated, sword-shaped foliage. Winner of the RHS Award of Garden Merit, it draws butterflies and hummingbirds. Grow in full sun, in rich, moist soil; hardy where winters are mild to moderate, with a protective mulch.
