Crocosmia

Crocosmia masoniorum (Iridaceae) is a cormous perennial native to the mountains of the Eastern Cape in South Africa, where it grows on damp rocky ledges beside streams. Its pleated, lance-shaped foliage is topped in high summer by tall, arching stems bearing a dense, one-sided spike of large, bright orange, funnel-shaped flowers. It is a parent species of many garden hybrids, including 'Lucifer'. Grow in full sun in moist, well-drained soil; one of the hardiest Crocosmia species, tolerating severe frost.
