Crocus speciosus (Iridaceae) is a cormous plant native to a wide area from Turkey and Crimea to Iran, growing at the edges of open woodland and in mountain meadows. In September–October it bears large, lilac-blue flowers veined with deeper violet, with long, bright orange stigma branches divided into filaments, appearing before the leaves. It is one of the easiest and most floriferous autumn crocuses, naturalizing readily. Grow in full sun or light part shade, in well-drained soil; very hardy.
