Eucomis

Category photo (no photo of its own for this entry)
Eucomis, a South African genus in the family Asparagaceae, comprises around fifteen species of bulbous plants forming a rosette of broad leaves, often tinged or mottled with purple. In summer a dense flower spike appears, topped with a crown of bracts resembling a pineapple's tuft, hence the common name pineapple lily. Grow in rich, well-drained soil, in full sun; the bulbs, hardy with protection, dislike waterlogging in winter.
