Hyacinthus orientalis, the common hyacinth, is a bulb native to the Near East (Turkey, the Levant, Iran), in the Asparagaceae family. The tunicated bulb gives rise to fleshy foliage and a dense, compact stalk bearing numerous small bell-shaped flowers, exceptionally fragrant, in shades from blue to pink, white, yellow, or red depending on the cultivar. It flowers early in the season, from late winter in mild climates. Widely forced in pots for indoor winter blooms, in open ground it needs well-drained soil and full sun.
