Iris albicans

Iris albicans, the white cemetery iris, is a rhizomatous iris probably originating from the Arabian Peninsula (Yemen, Saudi Arabia), introduced very early into Spain and then the rest of the Mediterranean basin. Its fleshy, fragrant rhizome bears semi-evergreen, sword-shaped grey-green leaves and a branched stem carrying white flowers, often tinged pale blue, with a white-and-yellow beard, in spring. Traditionally planted on graves in Muslim regions, it produces no viable seed and spreads only by rhizome division. Grow in well-drained soil, full sun.
