Iris hoogiana

Category photo (no photo of its own for this entry)
Iris hoogiana is a rhizomatous species from section Regelia, native to the grassy mountain slopes of Turkestan in Central Asia. It is the tallest of the Regelia irises, with flower stems 60-70 cm high bearing sky-blue to lavender-blue flowers with an orange or yellow beard and a notably silky, satiny sheen. Botanist W. R. Dykes considered it one of the most beautiful of all irises. It needs well-drained soil, full sun, and a dry summer rest, away from stagnant moisture.
