Moraea tristis

Moraea tristis is a cormous plant from South Africa, in the Iridaceae family, belonging to the large genus Moraea. Its epithet "tristis" (dull, sombre) refers to the muted, dark tones of its flowers, olive-brown to purplish, a colouring found in several species of the genus that attract pollinating insects drawn to such subdued shades. Like its relatives, it produces a single leaf and short-lived flowers lasting only a day. Flowering occurs in the southern spring, in well-drained soil and full sun, with a dry summer rest.
