Scilla natalensis

A summer-growing species, native to Natal (South Africa), from the coast up to an altitude of 2000 m, in the Drakensberg mountains, where it tolerates snow and frosts down to -7°C. The large, half-buried bulb will be at home in a rockery or in a pot, and it will form an attractive clump within a few years. In early summer, the leaves emerge at the same time as the tall spikes bearing a multitude of small blue flowers. A fine subject for large gardens. Growing it here was not easy, so we have removed it from our catalogue.
