Arum dioscoridis (Araceae) is native to the eastern Mediterranean (Turkey, Cyprus, Greece, the Levant), where it grows in fallow fields and olive groves. This perennial tuber produces arrow-shaped foliage in winter, followed in spring by a dramatic inflorescence with a black spadix surrounded by a yellow-green spathe blotched or striped with purple, giving off a fetid odour that attracts pollinating flies. Grow in well-drained soil, in full sun or part shade; the tuber goes summer-dormant and should be kept dry once the foliage dies back.
