Iris sintenisii

A rhizomatic evergreen Iris producing dark blue fragrant flowers during May.
Angelo Porcelli (Apulia Italy): this species is closely related to Iris graminea, but in Italy these species have a distinct distribution, with Iris sintenisii occurring only in Southern Italy. Ants are the main pollinator; they visit actively the scentless flowers which secrete droplets of nectar at the base of tepals.

The genus

Iris is a very large genus from the Northern hemisphere with about 300 rhizomatous or bulbous species. There are 6 sub-genus, each of which is again divided in sections. Examples of subgenera: Iris (rhizomes, bearded flowers), Limniris (rhizomes, flowers without beard), Nepalensis, Xiphium (bulb), Scorpiris (Juno), Hermodactyloides (the Reticulatas).
