Babiana pulchra

Babiana pulchra is a synonym now included under Babiana angustifolia, native to damp clay flats and lower slopes of renosterveld in the Western Cape of South Africa, from Porterville to Somerset West. This small cormous babiana bears spring spikes of cup-shaped, dark blue flowers with broad, subequal tepals enclosing the stamens and style, the lower segments marked with a blackish to dark red spot at the centre. Like other babianas, it needs well-drained soil, a sunny position and a dry summer rest typical of the Cape's Mediterranean climate.
